“I have a very good opinion of the way in which Mrs. Sakellaropoulou has carried out her duties” recently stated Kyriakos Mitsotakis, showing that the scale “tilts” towards the renewal of the term of office of the President of the Republic.

The conversation about who will be the person who will be the country’s first political agent for the period 2025-2030 is not at all premature.

The relevant discussion is expected to start after the European elections and “flame” from the autumn.

In January 2020, Katerina Sakellaropoulou was the only candidate and was elected with 261 votes with the support of New Democracy, SYRIZA, KINAL.

Six absences and 33 attendances were recorded. A second vote was not needed, exceeding by far the required majority of 2/3 of the body, which is provided for by the revised article 32 of the Constitution.

It is recalled that the question of dissolution of the Parliament, which concerns the majority, no longer exists.

The first citizen of the country is elected even with a relative majority in the fifth session of the Plenary if after the successive votes a broad consensus is not reached. In the first two votes 200 votes are required, in the third 180 and in the fourth an absolute majority of the entire number of deputies.

Is it possible that Kyriakos Mitsotakis has another person in mind? No other names have been put on the table. Information that speaks of objections that exist in the ranks of the “blue” parliamentary group has not been confirmed, however even if this is true it does not seem to be capable of threatening the candidacy of the current president.

Dissatisfaction was reportedly expressed by some members of K.O. in relation to his positive stance in favor of same-sex marriage. But can a bill overturn the planning of the top institution in the country? Unless there is an attempt to send a message that a person from the blue faction could be in Herodos Atticus for the next presidential term.

It will be interesting to see the stance taken by the other opposition parties and if possibly SYRIZA and PASOK submit their own proposals.
