Countdown to the European elections 2024. From 6 to 9 June 2024, European citizens elect their representatives as Members of the European Parliament (EP).

How many MEPs are elected?

A total of 720 MEPs will be elected in June 2024, 15 more than in the previous elections.

As a general rule, the number of MEPs is decided before each election. The total cannot exceed 750 plus the chairman.

The process in Greece

The polling stations in GREECE will operate on June 9, 2024, from 07:00 in the morning to 19:00 at night. The postal votes must have been received by the competent authorities within the relevant deadline, i.e. by 17:00 Greek time on June 8, 2024, in order to be counted as valid.

On Thursday at 11:00 am in the presence of the political leadership and representatives of SingularLogic, the final general test of the systems for the European elections of June 9, 2024 will take place at the Ministry of the Interior.

How many MEPs are elected?

Voters will elect 21 MEPs in 2024, as in the 2019 election.

Is voting mandatory?

Exercising the right to vote is mandatory – except for exceptions, for those over 70 years of age and for voters who are abroad.

How the ID and passport offices will operate on Saturday and Sunday

The Headquarters of the Hellenic Police announces that in order to better serve the citizens, in view of the European Elections, the Identity Offices and the Passport Offices of the Police Services, throughout the country, will operate, beyond their fixed hours of operation. See the schedule here

Over 160,000 postal vote envelopes – 237 polling stations will be set up

Over 160,000 postal vote envelopes have arrived, by post, at the sorting center at the Peristeri exhibition center.

To date, 168,500 envelopes with postal votes have been received. The process ends on Saturday at 5 pm.

According to the Ministry of the Interior, for the convenience of voters, citizens can refer to the website of the Ministry of the Interior in the section “Learn how to vote” (https://mpp.ypes.gov.gr) or contact the telephone number : 213 136 1500 daily from 09:00 to 21:00 to find out the polling station and the school complex in which they are voting as well as the date of their registration in the electoral roll.

The preference crosses

Up to four (4) preference crosses can be placed.

The candidates who receive the most crosses are elected, as long as their party has secured the corresponding seats.

As a necessary condition for a party to enter the 21-seat distribution mechanism, it must win at least 3%.

Free passage through the tolls for judicial representatives for the June 9 European elections

There will be free passage through all the toll stations in the country, for the legal representatives and the registrars of legal representatives who will go to perform their duties using private passenger cars and two-wheeled vehicles, in view of the European elections of June 9, 2024 , following an order given by the political leadership of the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport.

In particular, the free passage will be valid from Friday 7 June 2024 at 00:01 until Monday 10 June 2024 at 22:00.

Passing without the imposition of tolls will be done by showing their appointment decision and their police ID card.

It is noted that the “Attiki Odos” is excluded from the suspension of toll collection.

The concessionaires must keep a file with a record of the crossings and a note of the appointment decision, while the costs will be borne by the State, by virtue of the concession contracts.

Results

Two hours after the polls close at 21.00 at night, according to the report of SKAI, we are expected to have the first safe assessment of the results. Two hours later, at 11:00 p.m., the final result is expected, but not for all parties.

For the parties that are in the 3% zone, it is estimated that it will take more time to finalize whether they will elect an MEP or not.

What will happen in Europe?

At 21:15 the first projection of a possible result is expected and at 00:00 the first reliable estimate for the “27” countries.
