Foreign Minister Giorgos Gerapetritis will attend the vote for the nomination of the five non-permanent members of the Security Council during the period 2025-2026
Greece aspires in a few hours to be one of the new non-permanent members of the United Nations Security Council.
The foreign minister George Gerapetritis will attend the vote for the nomination of the five non-permanent members of the Security Council during the period 2025-2026, which will be held at 10:00 (17:00 Greek time) in the UN General Assembly hall.
“It is a position that Greece aspires to hold with vigor, to be able to unite the North with the South, the East with the West, so as to create a voice of reason, a voice of International Law within the United Nations Organization” , stated the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Giorgos Gerapetritis after his meeting with the Secretary General of the UN, Antonio Guterres.
Our country is a founding member of the United Nations and with its participation in the Security Council will support multilateralism, dialogue and diplomacy on the basis of international law, with the aim of achieving conditions of international peace, security, development, protection of human rights.
Diplomatic sources emphasized that the three Greek words, dialogue, diplomacy, democracy will be the compass on the journey of the Greek candidacy and the Greek term in the Security Council.
In an environment of multiple global challenges, conflicts and international fluidity, these priorities concern the peaceful resolution of disputes, respect for international law and the rules and principles of the United Nations Charter, the implementation of the “Women, Peace and Security” agenda, the climate change and security, the protection of children’s rights in armed conflicts, maritime security, etc.
Practical proof of Athens’ commitment to these priorities is Greece’s solidarity in Ukraine’s struggle to defend its sovereignty and territorial integrity, as well as our country’s active policy in the Middle East, in order to limit the humanitarian crisis, to to protect the rights of women and children, to secure the safety of international navigation and to promote peace.
