The leader of the Turkish Cypriots intensifies the atmosphere, Ersin Tatar ahead of the informal tripartite dinner with the President of the Republic of Cyprus, Nikos Christodoulidis and the UN Secretary General, Antonio Guterres, on October 15, in New York reiterating its steadfast position on the recognition of sovereign equality and equal international status.

In his new statements to the Turkish news agency Anadolu, Ersin Tatar repeated, among other things, that: “Our terms for the negotiations with the Greek Cypriots are clear. When sovereignty is satisfied (ie our demand for sovereignty), then the negotiation process can begin. Our sovereign equality must be recorded.”

Ersin Tatar said that at the dinner he will explain to his interlocutors that direct flights and trade to the self-proclaimed “Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus” and that they should be removed, as he said, the “outdated embargoes, isolations and barriers that have been unfairly imposed on trade, sports, music and international negotiations in order to assert our sovereignty.”

He set his condition by saying that formal negotiations will not begin until the acquired rights of the Turkish Cypriots are accepted and clear and unambiguous conditions are met. He stated that he will not take a step back from the policy of the two states with sovereign equality and equal international status.

“This dinner is an opportunity to explain our positions,” Tatar concluded.
