Opening the 1st forum for Thessaly, which is being held in Volos today, Christos Staikouras, Minister of Transport and Infrastructure, referred to the initiatives of the Ministry of a holistic recovery plan of Thessaly after the Daniel’s heavy weather, with a fan of measures on the road, totaling 1.4 billion euros.

As the Minister said: “The technical scales of the ministry’s services have carried out autopsies to record the damage, followed by wide meetings with regional governors and mayors of the affected areas. The ministry has again sent an autopsy process. In March 2024 the second cycle of consultation was completed among the bodies, with the aim of four packs of work at a cost of € 900 million with VAT, especially for road work. ”

Of these amounts, they were allocated:

  • 293.4 million euros for projects in Magnesia
  • 230.3 million euros for Trikala
  • 184.5 million euros for Karditsa
  • EUR 85.6 million for Larissa
  • EUR 87.3 million for Euboea
  • EUR 18.6 million for Fthiotida

Railway interventions of EUR 452 million

The minister also referred to the interventions for a more durable rail network in the area, with four contractors including:

  • Restoration of the Athens – Thessaloniki Double Railway (from Domokos to Krannona)
  • Restoration of Paleophasalo – Kalambaka line
  • Restoration of Volos – Larissa line
  • Restoration of Signaling and Telephone Systems by Paleofarsalos – Krannon.

The total amount of these projects amounts to € 452 million and proceeds with complete cooperation with local government. According to the minister, projects funded by the recovery fund will be completed by the summer of 2026, while the rest are implemented from 15 to 48 months from the signing of the contract.

Other interventions

Subsequently, Mr Staikouras also spoke about the repair of damage to school infrastructure, interventions of € 30.5 million, five sections of projects in various places in Thessaly, most of which are completed by March 2025.

The focus is, as the Minister pointed out, and the irrigation projects in the Thessaly region, such as the construction of a Trikala irrigation network, a project of 13.1 million, the construction of a savings in Pournari Ambelakion, a project of 7.5 million, as well as the 7.5 million project. Construction of a reservoir in Ayiocampos of Larissa, project of € 19.1 million and the creation of a lake construction in Almyros Magnesia, project of € 3.6 million. In addition, the work of the Enipea Dam and the study of Smokovo irrigation networks are in development.
