Pierrakakis: Digitization requires enhanced cybersecurity

by

The Minister of Digital Governance, Kyriakos Pierrakakiand the Vice-President of the European Commission, Margaritis Schoinas, inaugurated the new headquarters of the EU Organization for Cyber Security (ENISA) in Athens.

The increased levels threats against cybersecurity in Europe as a result of the war in Ukrainewhich is also conducted in cyberspace, was a key point in the speeches.

THE Kyriakos Pierrakakisstressed that his presence ENISA in Hellas is a real opportunity and that the role of this Organization is now increased due to the war in Ukraine. “What we are trying to achieve is as we move forward with our digital systems, as we digitize the state, to build the systems securely from the beginning. “We need a change of culture, we need a technological change, we need training, we need a full range of policies to be implemented and the role of ENISA across the European Union is extremely important,” he said. for Greece that hosts the headquarters of the Organization. He noted, however, that it is important for Greece not only to host ENISA but also to make the most of its presence here because our country has the ability to create an important ecosystem for cybersecurity.

“As far as our national strategy is concerned, the more we digitize the state, the more we digitize the interaction of the citizen with the state, in fact the focus is on how to upgrade the security of all our systems. And this is done given that some systems are new, some are less new and in this equation one must create as many security perimeters as we constantly do, as we add daily, to implement protocols and regulations such as those that arise centrally from the European Commission and organizations such as ENISA and, of course, to make the appropriate investments and acquiring central security points, and increasing security in each new system we acquire. All this is being done with the huge help – and funding – of the European Commission and the European Union, many of these projects are foreseen in the Recovery Fund: Greece will for the first time have its own security center, where it can have a full visibility in the focus of what is happening in the Greek State, in the country and in many areas of interest, in many areas of critical infrastructure. But I would say that this is just the beginning. The change in cybersecurity has at its core a big change in culture: it is not enough to make a change in technology because you can simply have built a technologically perfect system and its security can be overturned by a negligence of the human factor, as has happened in too many cases. So we need a change that will be at the core of education and a change in how we behave on an individual level.

As a matter of fact, the transition to the digital age requires us to look at these pieces. I would like to close by saying that it is a great joy and honor for us that ENISA is in our country “.

The Vice-President of the European Commission, Margaritis Schoinas stressed that “o war it is not only done in its streets Mariupol and his Kievhas already started in Internet, with a wave of cyber attacks that are part of this absurd war operation. The era of European innocence is over. We are now building adequate defenses against cyber attacks, we have very strong regulatory legislative interventions, but we are also slowly building operational capabilities that will allow us to respond, counterattack and defend ourselves. And ENISA, the new headquarters of which we are inaugurating today, is at the heart of this European defense system. “

Mr. Schoinas also congratulated Mr. Pierrakakis and his staff for “their tireless efforts aimed solely at strengthening the policies and the legislative and regulatory framework in Greece in the field of cybersecurity.” ENISA is a success story, a European success story which from today finds its right dimension here. With its location in such a central part of the capital of Greece, it will acquire exactly this semantic upgrade and will become widely known in the Greek Public Opinion “.

Finally, the Executive Director of Organization of ENISA, Johann Lepasar noted: “The new headquarters provides ENISA with a solid foundation for implementing its mandate to achieve a common high level of cybersecurity in Europe with a ‘new home’ for our staff and partners within the cybersecurity community. I thank the Greek authorities for their continuous and generous support and cooperation “.
