Chelsea manager Marina Granovskaya will leave Stamford Bridge this summer despite Todd Bowl’s efforts to keep him on, with the club already nominated a successor.
A close ally of Russian and Canadian Roman Abramovich for more than 20 years, he was called the “de facto chief of staff”. The couple met when they joined a Russian oil company in 1997.
Granovskaya has represented Abramovich at Chelsea since the club’s takeover and was appointed to the board of directors in 2013 to become leader.
He was responsible for overseeing the football aspect of the club’s work, including player contracts, manager appointments and transfers.
Granovskaya has become an excellent and respected photographer and was named director of the best clubs in European football at last year’s Ballon d’Or Awards organized by the Italian newspaper Tuttosport.
Boel, the new owner who bought Chelsea from Abramovich and was looking for a finalist candidate who wanted to leave the Granovskaya club, told both him and Bruce Buck about his time in west London.
However, before Buck can continue in her role, German newspaper Sportsbuild has decided that Granovskaya will leave and intends to end her long relationship with the club at the end of August.
Chelsea is already thinking about his successors, and his main option is Andrea Berta, who is now the sporting director of Atlético de Madrid in Spain.
The Italians helped build the team that won La Liga in the 2020-21 campaign, but Chelsea were already associated with defender José Jiménez, one of Atlético’s players.
Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel had spoken openly about Granovskaya (and Petr Čech, performance and technical adviser), but wanted to stay at the club after Abramovich’s departure.
He said in March: On communication and responsibility.
“Hopefully it will remain that way, but if it does, I will not affect either the information or the information.”
