Lewis Hamilton says he hopes George Russell can play the “guinea pig” role at Mercedes later in the 2022 F1 season as the team tries to get back to the front of the field.

Silver Arrows have been the fastest team in F1 every year since 2014, but have fallen behind this year and were unable to compete with advanced wins from Red Bull and Ferrari.

The Breckley-based team’s W13 cars have been plagued with crumb problems for most of the season. This meant that in each of the first nine rounds of each campaign round, installation experiments were needed to improve the performance of our competitors.

The porpoise phenomenon is an aerodynamic practice in which a new generation of F1 cars violently jumps up and down at high speeds, causing the driver’s head to bounce violently from side to side as heavy loads pass through the spine. .

Mercedes suffered from this problem more than the other nine F1 teams. Hamilton conducted further experimental installation tests after the campaign began. After the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, the team apologized to him when an aggressive setup dropped him. I had severe back pain and tried to get out of the car at the end of the race.

After struggling to get his car into free practice ahead of last weekend’s Canadian Grand Prix and ultimately finishing third, Hamilton is hoping Russell can ease the load.

“Yeah, maybe George can experiment later in the season,” joked Hamilton. “We’re just trying to work… we’re just trying to move forward as a team. Yeah, I think we’re moving forward, especially with just one or two dry workouts and not taking FP3. If you’re doing too many experiments, you’re going to have to be a little bit more careful, as it really gets in the way on weekends.

Yes, I think we can learn and improve a lot this weekend. But you know, great pace [in Canada].. And it’s very nice to see, it wasn’t always what he had in this car, so it’s nice to have a little better fight with him, him or what you call a car today.

Hamilton earned the podium for the second time of the season in Montreal after first attempting to challenge the prospect of his eighth World Cup appearance. Currently, the 37-year-old wants to fight for the next victory at the British Grand Prix.

“And I really want to move to Silverstone… this is a very important race for us and for me, so I really want it… I think I just want to fight these guys.”

The 2022 F1 campaign will continue at the British Grand Prix at Silverstone over the weekend of July 1-3.
