Thomas Tuchel dismissed reports that Timo Werner would leave Chelsea this summer.
The 26-year-old has been influential since making a £47.5m transfer from RB Leipzig in 2020. He has scored 23 goals in 89 games for Chelsea.
Sky Deutsche reported on Friday that tensions between Tuchel and Werner could prompt Germany to leave the country during the transfer and return to the Bundesliga.
But when asked if there was any substance behind the report, Tuchel said on Friday: “I don’t think so.
“I don’t know, Timo didn’t tell me.
“Right now, I think he wants to go to Chelsea. He hasn’t proven himself yet.
Tuchel also had the opportunity to remind the Chelsea hierarchy that their team “needs to be more competitive” by bringing in a new signing.
“Someone told me years ago, and I know if you’re going down the stairlift, you have to keep walking to maintain your position, and that’s it. I’ll never forget it,” the Chelsea manager said.
The Premier League and top-level sports in general are very difficult and need improvement if you want to catch up.
“We have to do our homework. The other teams are not sleeping. We have to be more competitive than we are now.”
