Manchester United are set to sign Newcastle United goalkeeper Martin Dubravka after agreeing a loan deal with a £5m purchase option.
United have already agreed personal terms with Dubravka and the player will undergo a medical, along with a non-binding purchase option, before his transfer to Old Trafford on Tuesday.
Eager to sign the experienced goalkeeper with the ball at his feet to compete with David De Gea, Eric ten Hag submitted his candidacy for the Slovakia squad last week.
De Gea is firmly established as United’s number one, but it is questionable whether he will fit into Ten Hag’s style after an error in a 4-0 loss to Brentford earlier this month.
Dubravka has been battling for the lead at St James’ Park and with the arrival of Nick Pope over the summer, 33-year-old Eddie Howe has been in the Magpies’ dugout for the first time. 3 games
He was not part of Newcastle’s Carabao Cup victory over Tranmere Rovers last week and Howe chose to start for Carl Darlow and was absent from Sunday’s 1-1 draw with Wolves.
Dubravka has made 130 appearances for Newcastle since joining from Sparta Prague and was named the club’s 2020 Player of the Year.
He is expected to replace veteran Tom Heaton as De Gea’s backup at Old Trafford after United decided to send Dean Henderson on loan to Nottingham Forest.
United were also interested in signing German international Kevin Trapp, but dropped out after Frankfurt demanded £21m.
Benfica’s Odysseus Brachodimos has also been considering a sale, but Portuguese clubs are reluctant to sell, and Borussia Mönchengladbach’s Ian Sommer has expressed reservations about a move to United before the World Cup.
