Oscar Pistorius: Asks for early release – Considers he has served his sentence

Oscar Pistorius, the Paralympic champion who murdered his partner, will seek his early release in court.

The former Paralympic gold medalist was jailed for 13 years after it emerged he shot and killed Reeva Steenkamp through a locked toilet door. He had claimed that a burglar had broken into their home and that he had found the young lady dead.

Pistorius will go to court, asking for his early release, due to a dispute over when his sentence began. The Paralympic gold medalist argues that he has already served enough time in prison to be eligible for parole, so authorities should consider whether he can be released early.

In 2017, the SCA said Pistorius should serve 13 years and five months for Steenkamp’s murder – overturning a previous, lighter sentence of six years for murder.

Last year, the same court ruled that his current term should run from October 2014, when he was initially convicted of culpable homicide.

Pistorius will ask the Gauteng High Court to order the parole board to hold a hearing for him. If this request is granted, the hearing is requested to be held within 30 days of the order.

However, Atteridgeville Prison, where he is being held, says the appeals court has issued conflicting rulings. The Department of Corrections also says it is seeking a court order to determine the start date of his sentence.
