Understand why Embolo didn’t celebrate Switzerland’s goal against Cameroon

by

Striker Breel Embolo scored Switzerland’s first goal in the 2022 World Cup, against Cameroon, in the first game of group G, this Thursday (24).

The Monaco player did not celebrate because he was born precisely in the capital of Cameroon, Yaoundé, and migrated to France with his mother when he was still a child, aged four. From there, they went to Switzerland, where the player grew up and managed to become a national in 2014.

To the French L’Equipe, he reinforced his intention not to celebrate. “Of course I won’t celebrate. But it’s an emotional sport, it wouldn’t be any different against my home country.”

The attacker said he has many friends in Cameroon, where most of his family lives.

“It’s a very special game. It’s not a bad pressure, it’s something positive. Representing my country, now facing the country where I was born, makes it more special. Cameroon won’t make the pressure greater, the Cup is already huge”, said Embolo, according to the African News website.

Embolo could represent the African country, but opted for Switzerland.

“I had the opportunity to go with Cameroon to the World Cup. And I was approached by Switzerland, where I grew up. The decision was very difficult. At some point you wake up, you have your answer and you say to yourself: This is what I want”, told L’Equipe.
