Arrascaeta scores twice, but the score is insufficient to take Uruguay to the round of 16

by

History repeated itself. Ghana had a penalty early in the match and missed it, changing the whole story of the game. This time, unlike 12 years ago, it wasn’t the beam that saved, but goalkeeper Sergio Rochet. The name of the game, even so, was Arrascaeta, who scored two goals. It was insufficient to advance to the next stage in this World Cup, as South Korea beat Portugal.

Arrascaeta was the name asked to start the match and that’s how things turned out. Shirt number 10, he showed his importance on the 25th minute, taking the opportunity to complete the header after a shot by Suárez, and on the 31st minute, hitting a beautiful right leg finish from outside the area.

The problem is that, in the other match, South Korea scored the winning goal in the last moments of the match. Uruguay needed to score one more goal to qualify, but they failed to do so. The long awaited redemption for the Ghanaian players did not arrive, nor was the glory repeated for the Uruguayans.

Under pressure, Uruguay put the whole team up for the attack, while Ghana tried to take advantage of a counterattack to still dream of qualifying. Ati-Zigi, goalkeeper of Ghana, still saved a good shot by Gómez from outside the area. Rochet, from Uruguay, also had to work after a bomb from Sulemana.

The South American team finishes the group stage in 3rd, while the Africans are in 4th. Portugal qualified first, followed by South Korea. Portugal and Korea are now awaiting the result of Group G, which will be defined at 4 pm. At the moment, Brazil is the leader, while Switzerland is second.
