Enebon of Sgouropoulos won the Europe Cup 2022-2023

by

A great finale for Greek table tennis at the European Team Cups to a competitive year that has already been extremely productive for our representatives. Yannis Sgouropoulos was crowned European Cup 2022-2023 champion with Enebon.

In yesterday’s 04 decisive second final of the second-ranked inter-club competition of the old continent, the French team defeated the Polish Dzialdovo 3-1 at home, covered the 3-2 defeat in the first final and lifted the trophy. He achieved it for the second time in the event after 2019, thanks to two wins by Sweden’s Christian Carlsson and one by Chuan Chi Yuan from Taipei.

The Eleusinian ace, who was not used in the second leg, reached another unprecedented distinction in his career, celebrating another European trophy, this time at collective level. He is the second Greek to achieve this with a foreign club, after Kallinikos Kreanga, who had a similar first with the also French Montpellier in 2003 (then the institution was called Nancy Evans). He had a great contribution on the way to the title, as he was among the key members of the team from the beginning of the season in the Champions League and then in the European Cup.

In addition, Sgouropoulos put the icing on the cake in a very productive season for the blue and white colors, where Olympiacos won the men’s Europe Trophy, Sarises Florinas took 2nd place in the women’s Europe Trophy, Panathinaikos entered the 8th of the women’s Europe Cup and earlier had made the historic start for a Greek club in the Champions League and finally the Polish Bogoria of Panagiotis Gionis advanced to the 4th place in the men’s Europe Cup.

The second final took place at the newly built Enebon sports center in front of hundreds of fans and in a festive atmosphere with music, dance shows and a presenter.

The only change in the lineup was made by Enebon where coach Adrian Krizan had Sgouropoulos on the bench this time and used Dane Anders Lind. Carlson was again a great protagonist, as he had achieved two victories in the lost first final. The very good thing for the French is that the experienced Chuan Chi Yuan showed his good competitive face in this match and when he made it 2-0 he gave his team the air of favourites.

In detail the progress of the match Enebon-Gialdovo 3-1:

Christian Carlson-Jonathan Groth 3-0 (11-6, 11-3, 11-1)

Chuan Qi Yuan-Jacob Dijas 3-1 (11-7, 9-11, 11-6, 11-1)

Anders Lind-Kai Konissi 1-3 (9-11, 11-9, 2-11, 6-11)
