Mourning for Lambros Konstantopoulos in Greek athletics. The former President of the KOE in the period 1993-94 and for about 75 whole years, a member of the great family of pool sports, “passed away” at the age of 92 due to the health problems he faced in the last few days.
The day of the great actor’s funeral has not yet been announced by his family.
Who was it
Lambros Konstantopoulos was born in June 1931 in Psila Alonia, Patras, where he lived the first 20 years of his life. He was initially a swimmer of NO Patras and later its pole vaulter (1948-51), winning the Greek championship in 1950, the last of the eight in total of the historic association.

In 1952, he moved to Athens and worked in the family construction company Odon Odostromata, while at the same time he developed a rich activity in the field of – at that time – EKOF.

From 1974 to 1984 he was the director of national teams in the Federation’s Boards of Directors, with the Presidents initially being Yannis Masouridis (1976-78) and then Dimitris Zografou.
In the period 1990-93, he served as First Vice-President of EKOF, with Giannis Palios as President, a position to which he was elected in September 1993, where he remained until December 1994.
During his presidency, Greece won its first medal (silver) in women’s water polo infrastructure (European Junior Women’s Championship, 1994 Papendal), while the men’s national team achieved its best position (seventh) so far in a World Championship (1994 Rome).
He was the first Greek player to participate in an international water polo federation, from 1979 to 1984 (Member of the Water Polo Technical Committee of LEN).
He was married to Penelope Laskaridou, who died in 2003, with whom he had a son, Giannis, who is a professor at the University of Piraeus.
