Greece is celebrating the second bronze medal in the U17 European Championship, which is being held in Tirana. After the great success of Vassilis Papageorgiou, who climbed onto the winners’ podium at 55 kg of the Greco-Roman, on Thursday (15/6) Maria Louiza Ghika managed to climb onto the winners’ podium by taking third place at 43 kg.
The “wonder girl”, who is one of the youngest in the tournament, despite fighting with girls bigger than her, managed to achieve an epic victory by reaching the winners’ podium.
In the game for the medal, however, she faced the also 15-year-old Polish Nina Marianna Michrzak. It started earlier with 2-0 and managed to be in front of the score until the end. In a phase where the points were shared, Ghika reached a 4-3 advantage and then in an exemplary way she bided her time and won the huge victory.
Ghika started her campaign with a 6-4 win over Romania’s Diana Iuminica Voiculescu and went on to face Jagmur Karabacak of Turkey in the semi-finals.
In an uneventful match, the young Greek showed herself to be highly competitive against her biggest rival and tried until the end for the victory that would give her the ticket to the semi-final. In the end, despite her best efforts, she suffered a 7-5 defeat, while until the last second she was in a position to claim the points that would give her the victory. Now, in the “small” final, she will fight with the Polish Nina Marianna Michrzak with the prize of a place on the podium.
Meanwhile, at 61 kg, Loukia Katagiannis did not succeed against Enda Balazs from Hungary and was left out of the competition.
Premiere in freestyle with three entries
On Friday (16/6) the freestyle athletes take their turn in the gymnasium. At 55 kg, Aik Kazarian will face Hatsi Zade from Turkey in the qualifiers, while at 65 kg, Vassilis Kesidis will fight with Aliaksandr Caballeu, who comes from Russia. Finally, at 80 kg, Theofilos Kesidis was drawn to the round of 16, where he will face the German Victor Schlegel.
