Deep mourning for Millwall and English football as a whole. The owner of the team, John Berilson, passed away at the age of 70.
The club announced that Berilson had been killed in an accident and had invested hundreds of millions since joining the club in 2006.
“It is with great sadness and heartbreak that we announce the passing of our beloved owner and president, John Berylson.
John, who turned 70 last month, died in a tragic accident on Tuesday morning and the thoughts of everyone at the club are with his wife Amy, his three children Jennifer, James and Elizabeth and the entire Berilson family.
John’s sudden and tragic death will undoubtedly affect all those who were fortunate enough to know him. He was a truly great man, incredibly devoted to his family and a person of such remarkable generosity, warmth and kindness. He lived a storied life, a life full of color and joy, and thought endlessly of others with an endless desire to share his vast knowledge and experiences to help people.
Under John’s passionate leadership and guidance, Millwall has enjoyed tremendous success and stability. Since first joining the club in 2006, he has presided over some of the biggest moments in Millwall’s history and his influence on the team has been huge. John continued to talk eagerly about the new season and his vision for the future and any success we achieve will be in his memory and honour. It will be his legacy.
John enjoyed the club’s underdog status and mentality. He became strongly associated with the team’s values and identity and was adored by the Millwall supporters. He was fiercely loyal to his entire staff and will be sorely missed by both them and the fans.
For those wishing to pay their respects, a book of condolence, which will be shared with the Berilson family, will be opened at The Den from 11am on Wednesday 5 July. Those unable to make it to The Den in person will be able to sign an online book of condolence, which will be available at millwallfc.co.uk in due course.
Rest in peace John and we thank you. You were loved and they loved you”the statement said.
