Two new NBA rules: New penalty for flopping and change in challenge

by

The NBA approved two changes in regulations in view of the new season, concerning the flopping and coach’s challenge. The innovations were approved by the committee made up of players, coaches and team officials.

Regarding the first one, now when a referee considers that a player is trying in a “theatrical” way to provoke a whistle, then the… offender is punished with technical penalty and the opposing team wins the right to take a shot, with a player of her choice. This penalty will not count cumulatively towards a player’s possible suspension (ie if he receives another technical penalty for another reason, he will not be suspended).

In fact, the referees will not be obliged to stop the progress of a match to blow the whistle for flopping, since they will have the possibility at the first stoppage to charge the infringement. It is also possible for referees to whistle at the same time for flopping and fouls.

As for the second innovation, it concerns the coach’s challenge. Now he will have the possibility for a second in the same game, if his first was successful. Conversely, if he fails his first challenge, he will not have a second chance in the same game to… force the referees to review a contested phase. If the first challenge is successful, the team keeps the time out they used to take it. The second he calls, however, he will be forced to “spend” a time out.
