Martinez: “We gave answers and we must continue to develop”

Her derby ended without a winner AEK and his Olympiakou at the OPAP Arena, with both teams staying at 1-1 for the 4th matchday of the Stoiximan Super League.

Speaking at the press conference, the technician of the “red and whites”, Diego Martinezfocused on his image of his team after the first 25 minutes, but also on the taste that the result leaves him, again referring to the fact that Piraeus is a new team that is now being built.

What Diego Martinez said in detail:

Regarding the “taste” of the 1-1 and the image of Olympiakos in the first half, which changed after 25′: “It was an intense and difficult game for both teams. As we expected our opponent in the first minutes appeared very well on the field. We lacked concentration, the opponent also had quality. After AEK’s goal, our team woke up. We were quite superior afterwards and what we lacked perhaps was composure and better accuracy in the final effort. We started well in the second half as well. We tried to show our identity and keep character. We responded well to the aerial game that AEK is strong at. We want to evolve. This is what we will try to do in the next matches. These kinds of games are difficult and intense for both teams. We managed something very good in moments of pressure we endured as a team. There was balance in the game. We had phases and the opponent. We are a team under construction and we played against a team more ready than last season. We gave answers and we have to keep improving.”

Why Olympiacos was affected in the second half and did not have a good creation and whether their players turned back subconsciously: “I do not agree. There was nothing in the minds of my players. The opponent also plays. We wanted to keep the same pace. AEK was superior in the first 20 minutes, then Olympiacos. We started well in the second half as well. It’s not always easy to keep the same quality and intensity throughout the game. There are games like that. We must continue to evolve. I am proud of my players, in the part where AEK is strong and that is the aerial game. We defended well. It’s not easy to keep the tension high.”

On whether he considers the result fair or good and on his momentary irritation at the AEK goal: “I don’t like conceding goals. I want to score goals and win. I live football with passion. I want to transmit this energy and passion to the team. Certainly the team wanted to win the game, to have more duration in our energy, but we did not succeed. In any case, it is important for us now to gain experiences. We have 16 new players plus two who belonged to the club and were not here last year. We definitely need to get to know each other better, to improve. We’re saving the experiences tonight. They always help us.”

On Podense’s debut and why the change was made: “Podense is a player who has spent about two weeks in training. His features suited the match. He knows Olympiakos and the opponent. I don’t like to single out and refer to players specifically. We are a new team with many young players. I’m new here too. It was an experience for me too. Changes will always happen. We need to refresh the team with energy. We don’t want to explain every change.”
