THE PAOK beat Aris 82-75 in the Thessaloniki derby and made history with seven consecutive home wins against his great rival.
It’s about longest home run streak– either of PAOK or Aris – since 2000 when both Thessaloniki teams stopped sharing the same seat. The previous longest streak, in terms of regular season games, was 5-0 again by Two-Headed from 2000-01 to 2004-05.
Two-headed defeated his “eternal” rival in a row…
*2017-18: 63-57
*2018-19: 95-79
*2019-20: 101-84
*2020-21: 75-64
*2021-22: 96-64
*2022-23: 88-66
*2023-24: 82-76
However, the 7-0 that PAOK reached yesterday has an even bigger extension. It tied the home team’s longest hitting streak in regular season and Stoiximan Basket League history (since 1992-93). He also had a seven-game regular-season home winning streak – typically or effectively – from the late 90s to the mid-00s. Then he had won in a row…
*1998-99: 78-54
*1999-00: 79-72
*2000-01: 77-76
*2001-02: 95-72
*2002-03: 81-70
*2003-04: 73-57
*2004-05: 92-79
This streak was stopped by Aris in the 2005-06 season, passing Pylaia with 79-76.
If we include the playoff matches, in that time the streak of the “black and white” as the home team had reached 9-0 after notching two victories for the minor finals in 1999.
In the years of the professional Championship, Aris Midea’s longest winning streak as a home team on the other hand is that of five from the regular season match of 2007-08 until the 2nd minor final of 2011.
However, if we leave the boundaries of the professional Championship, the “yellow and black” maintain the longest home streak in the Thessaloniki derby after they had made a 10-0 from 1971-72 until the match of the final phase (1-8) in 1979 -80.
PAOK laid the foundations of its victory in the first half, when it scored a series of top performances of the season, some of which were also placed high in the relevant lists overall of this year’s Stoiximan Basket League…
*He had 54 points (30+24) in the first 20 minutes of the derby. It was the 8th performance of 54+ points in a half this year and the biggest of the Doubleheaders in the seven games. It is even characteristic that in the first six he did not exceed the 42 points he had in the second part of the premiere match against Prometheus.
PAOK went to the locker room leading 54-34. It was the 10th time in this year’s Championship that a team had a 20+ point difference in a half (1st or 2nd) and the first of the Doubleheader. The previous one was the +7 he made in the second half of his matches against Peristeri bwin (35-28), Lavrios Megabolt (34-41) and Apollon Carna (28-35).
Fotis Takianou’s team significantly supported their offensive game inside the racket. The 44 points she had is her biggest performance this year after she had 38 in the match against Prometheus. Even making a +18 in the individual score through the racket against the corresponding performance of Aris Midea (44-26) he equaled the 6th biggest difference of this season.
*Dikefalos displayed more offensive versatility than in any other game in this year’s Championship, after having five players with double-digit points for the first time.
*Instrumental in breaking the tie to that point, leading by 20 at halftime and eventually getting the win, played 12-0 run that turned 30-30 at 12:18 into 42-30 15:58. With this, the hosts equaled their longest streak of the year, after they had also won 12-0 in the premiere against Prometheus.
*For PAOK mateco, yesterday’s derby also left an achievement that goes beyond the limits of the season. With the 14 assists recorded in his statistics, he became the third team in Stoiximan Basket League history after Panathinaikos and Olympiakos to break the 13,000 “barrier”.
Tsairelis in the 30-match lineup with PAOK
Michalis Tsairelis was one of the top winners and through his performance he climbed again into some historical lists of PAOK mateco and not only…
*Making his 68th appearance with the black and white in the Championship, he entered the 30th of the relevant list in the years of ESAKE (from 1992-93) after he “caught” Giorgos Maslarinos (1997-00) in 30th place.
*With the 14 points he had, he became the 21st in the history of Dikefalos in the professional Championship to reach 700+.
Along with them, he “climbed” a place in the list of scorers of the Stoiximan Basket League. He reached 2,350 and climbed to 55th after surpassing Kostas Kaimakoglou who had 2,343.
*Having 6/9 two points, Tsairelis climbed to the 12th place of PAOK mateco. He hit 242 two-point field goals, surpassing Anthony Boehner’s 238 in 1996-97.
*Finally, the experienced forward-center having 2/2 shots, broke the “barrier” of 600 hits. In 378 games he now counts 601/909 (66.11%).
On an individual level even for the winners…
*Fotis Takianos became the 10th PAOK mateco coach in the years of the Stoiximan Basket League to reach 10 victories. At the same time, he overtook Giorgos Kalafatakis and became 9th in races with 23.
*Kendall Smith was the top scorer of Dikephalos and with his 18 points he reached and exceeded 200 in 18 games in the Greek Championship.
*Andrew Harrison was 0-of-6 from 3-point range for his 7th shutout in at least six three-point attempts. The American has one more spot on this list after going 0/7 from 3-point range in Lavrio.
*Michael Gilmore stayed for 19:02 on the floor without scoring and without even getting a shot in the field. In the list of 12 cases of players missing at least 17 minutes of participation, PAOK mateco has half of them. Two from Schiza, two from Flaten, one from Margaritis and one from Gilmore.
