Alexios Sperlidis is celebrating his first medal in an EJU international tournament starting today.
The Greek judoka, with an excellent performance accompanied by three wins in four matches, won the -100 kg silver medal at the Birmingham Junior European Cup 2024 which ended today in “old Albion” and was attended by 258 athletes from 17 countries.
Sperlidis, who was seventh in the corresponding event last year, reached the final with three straight victories over Britain’s Fraser, Poland’s Walenciak and Holland’s Van Olstrom. In the final, he was defeated by the Frenchman Mekuch, as a result of which he took 2nd place.
Seven medals for Greece in the Balkan U15
Seven medals, two of which were gold, were won by Greece at the Balkan Championship 15 held in Cluj-Napoca, Romania. Liova Yumunkian was at the top of -73 kg, as was Evdokia Papadopoulou at +70 kg.
Emmanuel Salteris won the -46kg silver medal, while the bronze medals went to Panagiotis Spiliotis (-73kg), Elena Zaimidou (-70kg), Tzeni Koborozou (-48kg) and Vassilis Spyropoulos (-38kg).
Also in 7th place were Efstathios Zeibekis (-50kg), Nikolaos Tosounidis (-55kg) and Panagiotis Tosounidis (-38kg).
The Greek delegation was accompanied by the president of the Hellenic Judo Federation, Dimitrios Michaelidis.
