MacBook laptops are widely considered to be the best, but there is one thing that is often criticized. It’s a webcam.
For example, the recently updated 13-inch MacBook Pro only has 720p resolution on webcams.
Given the growing importance of video conferencing applications such as remote workflows and Zoom, this can cause problems.
However, the company has found an interesting solution. It combines the great camera of the iPhone with the features of the MacBook.
This is done through a new feature called Continuity Camera that Apple announced at the Worldwide Developers Conference in California this year.
This feature will be included with macOS Ventura, the latest macOS update that Apple plans to release in the fall. This app takes a channel from your iPhone’s rear camera and turns it into a webcam that you can use to enhance your video calls with apps like FaceTime, Microsoft Teams, WebEx, and more.
“Continuity Camera brings innovative features to every Mac, including center stage, portrait mode, and new studio lights, which illuminate the user’s face when the background is dark,” Apple said.
Additionally, Continuity Camera captures iPhone’s ultra-wide camera and enables Desk View, which simultaneously displays the user’s face and the top view of the desktop. This is great for making DIY videos, FaceTime sketching, and more.
Apple says it plans to partner with accessory maker Belkin to develop another mount that can hold the iPhone in place.
No new hardware is required to activate the feature on your MacBook or iPhone. All of these are supported by software updates.
How useful this feature will be has yet to be decided, but it’s another indicator that Apple can ensure by providing a continuous ecosystem between different devices.

Its ecosystem now transcends many areas beyond the product franchise, including payments, automotive, content, and security.
“All of this helps to further strengthen Apple’s control over the relevant device market, as more and more consumers choose the iPhone as their mobile phone.
