Android users rejoice: MagSafe charging for iPhones is coming to your phones thanks to… Apple

Apple is believed to have contributed significantly to the new specifications for Android’s ‘MagSafe’

If you are an Android user and have been jealous of the magnetic charger MagSafe of iPhones, stop, as the technology, with some modifications, is coming and on the Google platform as announced at CES 2023 in Las Vegas.

The Wireless Power Consortium (WPC) that sets the standard for wireless charging thanks to the Qi standard has announced the next-generation Qi2 (pronounced chee two) charging.

What does the Qi2 standard offer? A technology that Apple essentially spread to the market, namely MagSafe technology charging iPhones.

In fact, Apple is a heavily weighted WPC member, and is believed to have contributed significantly to the new specifications, which are due to be finalized in mid-2023.

In terms of what consumers can expect, the Qi2 is essentially Magsafe for Android. In fact, it’s more like a Magsafe for everyone. The concept is no longer limited to the Apple ecosystem, allowing for magnetic wireless charging and other accessories to “clip” on the back of your future smartphone, as well as a variety of other gadgets.

The spread of MagSafe technology will help create a common standard, which is a win for all users, but also an environmental win in terms of e-waste. However, mobile phones that will feature the new technology are not expected until late 2023 or 2024.

What is MagSafe

MagSafe is a magnetic “ring” that Apple added for the first time to the back of the iPhone 12, and it “snaps” onto the round magnetic coil of the charger. When you want to charge the iPhone, you no longer need to try to center the charger on the mobile for maximum performance, as they “snap” in the ideal place, like two magnets attracted to each other.

Both Qi and Qi2 are limited to 15 Watts, but improved coil alignment can improve charging speed.
