Musk says Tesla will accept dogecoin

by

Tesla will accept dogecoin cryptocurrency as payment for products such as the “Giga Texas” belt buckle and miniature electric vehicles, the automaker’s Chief Executive Elon Musk said on Twitter on Friday.

The announcement sent the value of dogecoin up 14% and came a month after Musk said Tesla would test the digital currency as a payment option.

Tesla’s products, which include a recently released whistle in the shape of the brand’s pickup truck and an ATV for children, are a hit with the company’s fans and usually sell out within hours of being put on sale.

Musk’s tweets about dogecoin, including one in which he called the currency the “people’s cryptocurrency”, have made the obscure currency a dream for speculators. The price of dogecoin, which started as a joke on social media, is up 4,000 percent in 2021.
