The app that highlights the multifaceted dimension of sex now seems to be attracting people of all philosophies – but is that a good thing?
It’s hard to think of something you can’t find on the Internet today, no matter how weird or special it is. The same is true of human relationships and preferences. Feeld is living proof of this, having been born to provide a space for people with more particular sexual tastes to express themselves freely and connect with like-minded people.
The application was born, specifically, in 2014, under the name 3nder and was mainly a communication platform for people looking to participate in a sexual threesome. Later, it was renamed Feeld, but thanks to some technical issues and the fact that it was probably still searching for its exact identity, it looked a bit like a dark corner of the internet, causing fear and suspicion among many.
Gradually and after some brave steps of revamping the app, Feeld started to attract a lot of people. Now, most people know about it and many have installed it and are experimenting with its capabilities. These are people who either take the brave step to break free and openly express who they are and what they are looking for, but also others who want to enter this mysterious world and see if there is anything to discover in it. So today, the revamped app of around 60,000 users gives a glimpse of what the future of dating holds for anyone who isn’t necessarily looking for the ultimate romantic love story.
For example, it is reported that there are 18 sexual orientation options on the site, which is refreshingly original compared to the possibilities offered by most classic dating apps. Of course, the platform is no longer only for threesomes, but for all kinds of communication and association: You can meet people who will become your friends, people who have the same sexual pursuits as you, a partner for a stable relationship or just someone with which you will share some moments of enjoyable sex without strings attached.
Users seem to love being part of a community, discovering new ways to exist sexually, meeting people, embracing their uniqueness, and learning not to be ashamed of who they are.
And while all this is very positive, the “opening” of the application to the general public has caused a serious problem: It changes the identity of the application, threatening to destroy its uniqueness. Many of the new profilers don’t really know anything about the nuances of sexual exploration, how to be morally non-monogamous, or how to navigate consent.
Some of those in the kink community have embraced the new members, while others seem troubled by this development, pointing out the problems it has created. Many claim they now feel like a “spectacle”. One user gleefully tells Cosmopolitan UK that some men “see the women there as ‘easy’ and very available for sex.” Another user agrees, describing the app as “oversaturated with people who have no idea, asking too personal questions too soon.”
And therein lies the problem. When you join a community but don’t follow its rules, you ruin the atmosphere for everyone. Your ignorance of the nature of this community sometimes causes you to unintentionally send the wrong message and even be offensive to others.
Commenting on this development, Ana Kirova, CEO of Feeld said, “In terms of scale, there is so much potential for Feeld, but users need to be confident that they are engaging for the right reasons and behaving in a certain way. We are not trying to grow at any cost.”
Sex positivity is great as long as everyone is fully aware of where they are participating and how they are handling it. We’re at a bold frontier for sexual expression, with more and more people flocking to the platform in search of a more authentically human experience, more honesty and kinkier sex. “We’re exploring ways to connect people in different ways and create other opportunities for serenity and discovery on the platform,” concludes Kirova.
