Israeli archaeologists have unearthed a coin dating back 1,900 years in the West Bank, the Bar Ilan University (BIU) in central Israel announced today.

Researchers from the BIU and the Jewish University of Jerusalem have discovered the ancient currency in the Judean desert, some 14 miles[14 km]south of Jerusalem.

It was found in a cave that, according to researchers, was a refuge for Jewish rebels in the Third Jewish War (Bar Kochba Uprising) against the Roman Empire (132-136 AD)

One side of the coin depicts a temple – probably Solomon’s “Second Temple”, which was completely destroyed by the Romans in 70 AD. during the First Jewish War.

On the other side of the coin are the Arbaa Minim – four species of plants used to celebrate the Sukkot (Festival of Scenes) – and the inscription “For the Freedom of Jerusalem”.

Israel has annexed the West Bank and East Jerusalem claimed by the Palestinians since the 1967 Six Day War.
