President Joe Biden said his administration plans to send a long-range missile system to Ukraine, backing an earlier statement in the day that the United States will not provide advanced weapons to war-torn countries.

In an article in The New York Times, Biden stated that the US goal was “to have a means to maintain a democratic, independent, sovereign and prosperous Ukraine and to protect itself from further aggression.”

Biden noted that the United States has already sent a significant amount of weapons and ammunition to Ukraine to support the fight against Russian troops, and said his administration will send more sophisticated missile systems and ammunition to the rice field.

The beamed missile system can engage enemy targets at a distance of approximately 50 miles. Biden said transporting new weapons would allow Ukraine to “attack key battlefield targets with greater precision.”

Ukraine will receive a US-made high-mobility artillery missile system as part of its 11th aid package since the start of the war in February.

Biden’s statement to the Times came after he told reporters that the United States would not send weapons that could reach Russia to Ukraine.

“We have no intention of sending a missile system to attack Russia in Ukraine,” he said on Monday.

Biden’s change of heart sparked an angry reaction in Russia on Wednesday.

“We believe that the United States is shooting intentionally and enthusiastically,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told a news conference. “Such a supply does not contribute to the preparation of the Ukrainian leadership to resume peace talks.”

Russia warns that countries supplying Ukraine with additional weapons will face consequences.

Biden said in his article that the move was not intended to interfere with Russia.

“We are not attempting a war between NATO and Russia. The United States will not try to drive you out in Moscow unless you agree with Mr. Putin and think his actions are outrageous. Let’s do it,” Biden wrote.

Until the United States or our allies are attacked, we will not be directly involved in this conflict by sending American troops to fight in Ukraine or attacking Russian troops.

The president then said that the United States did not encourage or allow Ukraine to attack Russia and that it is unlikely to prolong the war or cause problems for Russia.

In addition to weapons, Biden added that the United States will provide Ukraine with billions of dollars more in funds.
