The visit of the Turkish Foreign Minister rekindles the reactions of the Turkish Cypriots to the provisions of the recent economic cooperation protocol with Ankara.
The Turkish Foreign Minister added more fuel to the fire, which was ignited in the Turkish Cypriot community by the publication of the provisions of the Ankara-occupied economic protocol. Mevlüt Tsavousogluwhich has been located in occupied Cyprus since Saturday.
Although it was initially estimated that the Turkish Foreign Minister would try to operate a fire brigade and amuse the concerns of the Turkish Cypriot majority over Ankara’s intention to impose its will within the community, Tsavousoglu chose the path to all those who react to the ever-increasing influence of Turkey in the occupied territories.
In this context, the Turkish Foreign Minister held a series of meetings with Turkish organizations, leaving out of his program contacts with the organizations of Turkish Cypriot doctors, lawyers, teachers and civil servants. In fact, he sent a clear message to these organizations that Turkey “will not allow those who try to disrupt unity” to achieve this.
Protests over “surrender to Turkey”
The Turkish Cypriot community has been in turmoil lately, which translated into a protest on Saturday, for “opposition to the political tradition of the Turkish Cypriot government in Ankara. The surrender is related to the provisions of the Economic Cooperation Protocol, which largely transfers governance practices in Turkey to the occupied territories. Indicatively, the protocol provides for the restriction of the right to assembly and demonstration, but also provisions that restrict the freedom of expression on Social Media and in the Press. A protest rally was held this Friday by members of the Turkish Cypriot journalists’ union. Mevlüt ÇavuÅŸoλουlu will leave for Turkey tonight after meeting with Turkish Cypriot leader Ersin Tatar and “Prime Minister” Unal Ustel.
