One of Hong Kong’s most famous landmarks is submerged in the South China Sea.
The Jumbo Floating Restaurant caters to millions of guests including Tom Cruise, Queen and Richard Branson.
For decades, the massive structure has been a “necessary stop” when visiting Hong Kong.
However, the pandemic caused an economic battle and the prestigious restaurants closed in 2020.
The 260-foot-tall restaurant’s main ship was towed from Hong Kong last week.
He was on his way to a private shipyard when he was taken prisoner in the South China Sea on Saturday due to a “handicap.”
The ship sank off the Shisha Islands, also known as the Paracel Islands.
Aberdeen Restaurant Enterprises, the company behind the Jumbo floating restaurant, said no one was injured in the accident.
After the entrance of the water, the ship began to collapse and the structure sank deep into the water, despite trying to correct the situation.
“The depth of the site exceeds 3,280 feet (which complicates) rescue operations,” Aberdeen Restaurant Enterprise said in a statement.
The company added: “I am very saddened by this incident.”
In their heyday, the giant floating restaurants have attracted customers from all over the world, with millions of people visiting for a unique dining experience.
The city’s first and largest floating restaurant, Thai Pack, opened in 1952.
It was known for its luxury as “a stopover for a tour of Hong Kong”.
Tai Pak later merged with two other institutions into an aggregate called Jumbo Kingdom.
Guests can dine from the city’s Aberdeen Promenade or from Siam Vanport to the building on a free ferry.
Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip visited Hong Kong in 1975 to host a floating restaurant.
The ship also welcomed actors like Tom Cruise.
The Jumbo Kingdom, which underwent a major million-dollar renovation in 2003, was able to hold 2,300 dining rooms.
However, the pandemic proved to be a costly coffin risk, and in 2020 the site was closed and all employees laid off.
Aberdeen Restaurant Enterprises said the restaurants have become a financial burden to shareholders as millions of dollars have been spent on restaurant inspection and maintenance.
The restaurant was removed last Tuesday.
According to the company, it plans to move the jumbo floating restaurant at a lower price that allows for maintenance work.
Before leaving, the ship was thoroughly inspected by a marine engineer and a store was set up.
All relevant permits have been obtained, the company added.
“The company is currently receiving additional details about the accident from the towing company,” a spokesperson for Aberdeen Restaurant Enterprise said.
The Jumbo Floating Restaurant will appear in such films as Jackie Chan’s Patronage, the 1996 film “God of Cooking” and Godzilla Destroya.
He has also appeared in video games such as Fatal Fury 2 and Sleeping Dogs.
