by

Suspected cases of the Omicron mutation are being investigated in Germany and the Czech Republic, alerting health authorities.

A minister in the German state of Hesse said today that the recently identified Omicron variant of the coronavirus had most likely reached Germany.

“Last night, many mutations with Omicron-like features were found in a traveler returning from South Africa,” Kai Klose, the Minister of Social Affairs in the western German state, where Frankfurt Airport is located, wrote on Twitter.

He added that the full sequencing of the virus variant is underway.

At the same time, according to the National Institute of Public Health, the Czech Republic is examining a suspicious case of the new Omicron variant of the coronavirus found in a person who had spent some time in Namibia.

“A laboratory is testing a possible finding on a positive sample of the Omicron variant. We are awaiting either confirmation or refutation,” spokeswoman Stepanka Tsekova said in an email.
