Six people were killed and at least 31 seriously injured after a gunner opened fire at a July 4 parade in Chicago’s prestigious suburbs.
About 10 minutes after the parade began at 10 a.m. Monday in Highland Park, shots rang out, the Chicago Sun-Times reported.
According to witnesses, the shooter fired from the roof of a nearby business. Chris Coveley, a spokesman for the Lake County Major Crimes Task Force, confirmed the report.
“At least for now, it seems completely random,” CBS News said.

According to Police Chief Chris O’Neil, the shooter is a white male between the ages of 18 and 20 with long black hair and wearing a white or blue T-shirt.
As of late Monday afternoon, police were still searching for a shooter and residents were told to evacuate to their location. Authorities said they had recovered a “powerful” rifle on the roof, but did not immediately provide additional details.
“We are actively tracking down the person responsible for this shooting,” Coveley said.
According to the Sun Times, three bloodied bodies were covered with blankets at a parade checkpoint, injuring five others.

The victims brought to North Shore hospitals were between the ages of 8 and 85 and included 4 or 5 children.
Several witnesses reported hearing gunshots.
“I heard 20 to 25 shots in a row, so it couldn’t just be a rifle or a shotgun,” Highland Park resident Miles Zaremsky told the Sun Times.
Zaremski said the shooting took place on Central Avenue near Second Avenue and he saw “people in the area shot,” including “bloody women.” According to him, he did not survive.
I could hear the police officer telling the crowd. It’s not safe to be here.”
Runners left chairs and blankets along the parade route on Central Street. According to the Sun-Times, Klezmer’s band played momentarily unaware of the shooting.
Police patrol the parade area with a rifle looking for a suspect. At 11:00 a.m. local time, it was still considered a lively shooting scene.
Highland Park Mayor Nancy Rotelling said the FBI and Illinois police are working with local law enforcement agencies to investigate.
“Our community has been terrorized by the violent acts that shake our hearts,” Rotelling said.
“Our hearts go out to the families of the victims during this devastating time. On the day we come together to celebrate community and freedom, we mourn the loss, the tragic loss of life. We fight against the fear that has been given to us.”
Sen. Julie Morrison of Illinois said she was a block away when the shooting started.
“I heard a bullet that I thought was fireworks. All of a sudden this wave came at us, screaming, crying, hysterical and starting to carry the kids,” Morrison said.
Meanwhile, parade spokesman Brad Schneider said he and his staff were safe but did not provide details about the shooting.
“Today a shooter hit Highland Park during the Independence Day parade. My campaign team and I were gathered at the beginning of the parade when the shooting started,” Schneider wrote. “My team and I are safe. We are carefully monitoring the situation and have contacted the mayor.”
