EU: Funds of 2.9 million euros for the needs of displaced children from Ukraine

The EU’s schools program aims to promote healthy and balanced diets by distributing fruit, vegetables and dairy products to students, while offering educational programs on agriculture and healthy eating.

THE redistribution of support under the EU schools programme will allow the allocation of 2.9 million euros to cover the needs of of displaced children from Ukraine attending EU schools. This redistribution follows the publication, on 1 June, of a regulation calling on Member States to review their applications for support under the schools program for the next school year, which will run from 1 August 2022 to July 31, 2023.

The EU’s schools program aims to in promoting healthy and balanced nutrition through the distribution of fruit, vegetables and dairy products to the students, offering at the same time educational programs on agriculture and healthy eating. The total budget of the program amounts to 220.8 million euros per school year, of which up to 130.6 million euros are earmarked for fruit and vegetables and up to 90.1 million euros for milk. This amount consists of national funds determined by the Commission on the basis of Member States’ requests.

The invitation to Member States to reconsider their requests was made in light of the unprecedented situation caused by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, which requires solidarity among Member States to reduce the burden on Member States caring for children displaced by the Ukraine. The Commission decided new allocations on the basis of the notifications received from the Member States. The amounts not used by the Member States were redirected to the countries hosting the largest number of children from Ukraine.
