Police have arrested a mother accused of selling her newborn son for £3,000 to pay for his nose job.
An unknown woman from Dagestan in southern Russia is said to have told her friend that she did not want children.
The prosecution said the couple had arranged to buy the baby just five days after it was born on April 25.
According to police, the 33-year-old mother gave her son to the couple in return for a deposit of just 20,000 rubles (£274).
However, the baby needed hospital treatment and doctors asked the couple who bought him for a birth certificate, authorities said.
Police also asked the woman for the documents she gave them in exchange for an additional 100,000 rubles (£1,370) on May 26, police added.
Unbelievably, the woman told the couple that she was going to spend money on her cosmetic nose job.
However, police arrested the group for traffic offenses before the couple handed over R200,000, £2,730.
A criminal case was launched against a 33-year-old resident of Kaspiysk, according to a statement from an investigator.
MailOnline reports that neighbors are believed to have advised husbands and wives to take their babies after learning of their mother’s condition.
“I made friends and offered to give children to families who could no longer have children,” the neighbor told police.
