Moscow: Ukrainian drones hit nuclear facilities in Zaporizhia

by

The reactors were not damaged, Russian news agency Ria Novosti reported

The Russian administration in its partially occupied region Zaporizhia claimed today that Ukraine had launched a drone attack on a nuclear power plant without damaging its reactor.

Reuters was unable to confirm this information from independent sources and the Ukrainians officials had no comment.

Ukraine accuses Moscow of deploying an army and storing military equipment at the Zaporizhia nuclear power plant, Europe’s largest nuclear power plant. The station is located near the town of Enerhodar, in Russian-occupied territory.

Vladimir Rogov, who is a member of the Russian administration, wrote on Telegram that three Ukrainian drones “kamikaze” they hit the station. Speaking to the Russian agency RIA Novostisaid the reactor section of the plant was not damaged.

Ukraine’s state-run nuclear power company Energoatom, whose employees continue to operate the plant even though the site is under Russian control, later issued a statement accusing Russian forces of requesting access to the three reactors’ turbine sites to store equipment and tanks. Energoatom claims, without presenting any evidence, that Russian forces are doing this because they are afraid of “gifts” from the Ukrainian armed forces, namely targeted strikes. The company had no comment on the alleged drone attack.
