Zelensky’s speech at the Venice Film Festival – “Don’t forget the war”

by

The Ukrainian president, an actor himself, called through a video message to his colleagues and the world of cinema in general “not to forget” the war in his country which “does not last 120 minutes but 189 days”.

The red carpet was rolled out, the photojournalists’ flashes flashed: the 79th Venice Film Festival, the oldest film festival in the world, kicked off tonight, with official guest Catherine Deneuve and with the unexpected appearance of the Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky.

The 78-year-old French actress was honored with the Golden Lion for her entire career. A visibly moved Deneuve, wearing a crimson gown, thanked the audience after being eulogized by French creator Arnaud Deplesin.

What followed was a surprise: Volodymyr Zelensky, an actor himself, appeared on stage, through a video message, to call on his colleagues and the world of cinema in general “not to forget” the war in his country which “does not last 120 minutes but 189 days”.

At the end of his speech, on the screen, against a black background, appeared a macabre list: the names of all children and teenagers, up to 18 years old, who have been killed so far in the war.
