The Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky said today that he called on the European Union to urgently release the next amount of its financial aid to Ukraine, while pushing for a new wave of sanctions against Russia, during a telephone conversation with the president of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen.
“We discussed the urgent availability of the next tranche of European macro-economic assistance, while emphasizing the need to prepare the 8th package of Western sanctions against Russia, including a ban on issuing visas for Russian citizens,” he said on Twitter.
Zelensky, who has warned Europeans to expect a tough winter due to cuts in Russian oil and gas exports, also said he and von der Leyen had coordinated “steps to limit Russia’s excessive profits from sales oil and natural gas.”
Ukrainian Prime Minister Denis Smykhal said earlier that Kyiv expects a tranche of 5 billion euros of macro-economic aid from the EU within the next week
