“As a first step, Russian and Ukrainian forces must commit not to engage in hostilities either targeting or emanating from the station facilities,” Guterres told the United Nations Security Council.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres today appealed to Moscow and Kyiv to agree on a demilitarized perimeter around the Ukrainian nuclear power plant in Zaporizhia, which is under the control of Russian troops.

“As a first step, Russian and Ukrainian forces must commit not to engage in hostilities either targeting or emanating from the station facilities,” Guterres told the United Nations Security Council.

“As a second step, there should be agreement on a demilitarized perimeter. In particular, it should include the commitment of the Russian forces to withdraw all their soldiers and equipment from the specific perimeter, as well as the commitment of the Ukrainian forces not to enter it,” he stressed.

The International Atomic Energy Agency had earlier called for a safety zone around Europe’s largest nuclear power plant, pointing out that its experts had found extensive damage to its facilities.
