Many changes are happening in Downing Street.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson resigned as leading Conservative candidate Liz Truss governed after defeating Rishi Sunak in the battle for the top seat by 21,000 votes.

Johnson announced he would resign amid the Partygate and Chris Pincher scandals that have led to the resignation of many lawmakers.

Mr. Johnson will be moving permanently from Number 10, but there is a Downing Street resident who retains his position.

Of course, we are talking about the resident cat of the Cabinet Office and the Chief Mouser.

What is the name of the Downing Street cat?

The title of Chief Mouser is currently held by a cat named Larry.

The brown and white tab has held the title since 2011 after the Battersea Dogs and Cats staff adopted the number 10.

The Downing Street website describes Larry’s duties as “welcoming guests to the house, checking security measures and testing antique furniture for sleep quality”.

He served under three prime ministers: David Cameron, Theresa May and Boris Johnson.

Larry’s accomplishments have come under some scrutiny in the past. A month after he arrived at Downing Street, an anonymous source told the Daily Telegraph that Larry displayed a “distinct lack of killer instinct”.

With that being said, he was seen almost coming out in 2020.

Larry’s relationship with other Downing Street animals has been a cause for concern in the past.

She reportedly had several fights with the Foreign Office cat, Palmerston, and Larry had to visit a vet after giving birth to a particularly violent litter in 2016. She did not convert.

His relationship with visiting politicians has also been a bit rocky, with Larry being controversial during President Donald Trump’s visit to Downing Street.

Larry decided to lie under Trump’s £1.2m armored car. This meant that the former US president was unable to leave after his meeting with Theresa May.

However, David Cameron said that Larry seems quite enamored with Trump’s predecessor.

“Funny, he liked Barack Obama,” the former prime minister told the BBC in 2011. “Obama gave him a stroke, but Obama was fine.”

Who owns Larry the Cat?

Technically, the Downing Street staff own the money and are not responsible for keeping Mouse No. 10.

David Cameron explained in his final question to the Prime Minister in 2016 that Larry would not leave Downing Street after the change in Prime Minister because he was a public employee and not private property.
