The success of the counteroffensive against Russian invaders shows that Ukraine can defeat Moscow’s forces, but Kyiv needs more weapons from its partners, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Nmytro Kuleba said on Saturday.
Earlier, the Russian army had abandoned one of its key bastions in northeastern Ukraine due to the advance of Ukrainian forces.
The Ukrainian foreign minister, in a press conference with his German counterpart Analena Berbock, pointed out that some allies had initially hesitated to send weapons to his country, but that has now changed. “We have shown that we are capable of defeating the Russian army. We are doing it with the weapons we were given,” he said.
“And that’s why I repeat: the more weapons we get, the faster we will win and this war will end,” stressed the Ukrainian Foreign Minister.
Although Germany has sent self-propelled howitzers to Ukraine, Kyiv has also requested Leopard tanks, Marder armored vehicles and Gepard anti-aircraft tanks.
Kuleba, who has previously criticized Germany for “delay” in sending weapons systems, complained that Ukraine paid a price for consultations within the German government. “Every day, while someone in Berlin is thinking, taking advice, or deliberating whether to give tanks or not… someone is dying in Ukraine because the tank didn’t arrive,” he said.
German Foreign Minister Analena Burbock, who traveled to Kyiv, promised further military aid to Ukraine and did not rule out the delivery of tanks. “I understand that time is important,” he said, adding that “the next few months will be critical.”
