“He saw the cashier of the gas station as a representative of the state and the anti-coronavirus policy, which he considered wrong and wanted to exemplify through his act,” the decision states
The district court of Bad Kreuznach, Rhineland-Palatinate, imposed a life sentence on the 50-year-old man who on September 18, 2021 shot and fatally wounded the 20-year-old gas station attendant who asked him to comply with anti-pandemic measures and wear a protective mask inside store.
Mario N., according to the judges, was motivated by his extreme right-wing beliefs and general hostility towards the state. “He saw the cashier of the gas station as a representative of the state and the anti-coronavirus policy, which he considered wrong and wanted to exemplify through his act,” the decision states.
The perpetrator had confessed that out of anger, because the young cashier refused to sell him beer unless he wore a mask, he went home, got his gun and returned to the gas station to shoot the victim. The defense had requested that the act be classified as manslaughter because the perpetrator had previously consumed alcohol, but the request was rejected by the court.
