Orders for fresh cut flowers have increased by 90% since the queen died, says Selcuk Celebi, a member of the Antalya Commodity Exchange, adding that Turkish florists have only been able to meet about 40% of demand.
Turkish florists are chartering cargo planes instead of lorries as they rush to get as many flowers as they can to the UK to cope with a flurry of orders following Queen Elizabeth’s death.
Orders for fresh cut flowers have increased by 90% since the queen died, says Selcuk Celebi, a member of the Antalya Commodity Exchange, adding that Turkish florists have only been able to meet about 40% of demand.
“It is the end of an era in the (Mediterranean province) of Antalya. We are in a period where production in the highlands of (southern province) Isparta is declining,” Celebi told Reuters.
The surge in demand means florists have had to charter planes to send flowers to Britain, which takes a day as opposed to a week for trucks, Celebi explained.
Turkish Airlines subsidiary Turkish Cargo has announced that it has started shipping more than 500,000 flowers weighing nearly 13 tons from Antalya and Isparta to England for Queen Elizabeth’s funeral.
“Since the beginning of the week, Turkish Cargo has delivered almost four tons of flowers to London,” reports the company.
In the period September 5-12, official figures show that flower exports from Turkey to England increased by 40%, compared to the same period last year.
