Lower than expected participation in Elizabeth’s popular pilgrimage: about 250,000 people “passed”

Initial estimates spoke of 700 thousand people.

About 250,000 people paid their respects to Queen Elizabeth’s coffin at Westminster Hall in London, where her body had been put on public display, Culture Minister Michelle Donelan announced today.

That number is far less than initial estimates of 700,000 people as citizens of all ages and walks of life paid their last respects to the Queen after waiting for hours in a huge line through the streets of London for more than four days.

“We are at about 250,000. We’re working on those final numbers,” Donelan told Times radio station. Full details will be released in due course, she added.

The funeral of Queen Elizabeth, who died aged 96 after 70 years on the throne, was the first public funeral since that of Winston Churchill in 1965.

Some 321,360 people had then paid their respects at his coffin in Westminster Hall, according to figures from the House of Commons.
