Russia: Continued contacts with US after Putin-Biden talks

by

Russian and US officials will immediately resume yesterday’s two-hour teleconference between Presidents Vladimir Putin and Joe Biden on Ukraine to discuss this “complicated conflict situation,” the Kremlin said.

However, no specific dates or details were given on how these contacts will be made.

The agreement to continue talks was the main, tangible result of a video conference in which the two leaders presented opposing positions on Ukraine, which it says is preparing for a possible invasion by tens of thousands of Russian troops near its borders.

Neither side spoke of significant progress in the talks, in which Biden warned Putin that the West could impose “strong economic and other means” on Russia if it invaded, while Putin called for assurances that NATO would not expand. to the east.

Russia denies threatening its neighbor and says it is responding to threats from Ukraine and NATO.

“The presidents have agreed to appoint the delegates, who will soon begin a debate on this complex conflict, a debate on strategic security issues on the continent,” said Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peshkov.

He said the two leaders would have to speak again after contacts between their officials, but that no date had been set for the next communication.

Peshkov said the video conference did not discuss the possibility of Western sanctions against Russia’s new Nord Stream 2 pipeline.

White House National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan said yesterday that the fact that gas has not yet begun to flow into Nord Stream 2 creates a lever of pressure for the West against Putin.

“If Vladimir Putin wants to see gas flow through this pipeline, he may not want to take the risk of invading Ukraine,” Sullivan told reporters at the White House.

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmitry Kuleba told Reuters that talks between Biden and Putin had served the purpose of “preventing and de-escalating.”
