A reconnaissance aircraft of US Navy flew near the site of the Nord Stream 2 pipeline fault in the Baltic Sea, hours after the first damage appeared, Reuters reports, with Washington admitting the flight was “routine”.

The Russian conductors Nord Stream 1 and 2 they ruptured on September 26, draining gas into the Baltic Sea off the coast of Denmark and Sweden. Seismologists recorded explosions in the area and police in several countries have launched investigations.

Flight data showed that a reconnaissance plane P-8A Poseidon were over the North Sea when Swedish seismologists recorded what they later described as an undersea explosion southeast of the island of Bornholm in the Baltic Sea.

The plane, which had taken off from Iceland, performed a circling pattern over the Polandbefore moving away towards the Baltic pipeline area, according to data.

The identity of the plane could not be immediately ascertained due to the type of rotary identification code sometimes used by such planes, but the US Navy confirmed that it was a US aircraft.

“The US Navy P-8A Poseidon aircraft seen in the tracking data conducted a routine maritime reconnaissance flight in the Baltic Sea, unrelated to the Nord Stream pipeline leaks”a US Navy spokesman said.

Asked if any of the information gathered could help investigators investigating the pipeline breaks, U.S. Naval Forces Europe-Africa spokesman Capt. Tamara Lawrence said: “We have no additional information to provide at this time.”
