Stoltenberg: NATO will not reveal what its response will be to a Russian nuclear attack

“Even the use of a low-yield nuclear weapon would be a very serious (development), which would change the nature of the war in Ukraine,” the NATO secretary general said.

If Russia uses any type of nuclear weapon against Ukraine, there will be “severe consequences,” NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said, adding that the North Atlantic alliance would not reveal exactly what its response would be.

“We won’t go into exactly how we would respond, but of course that would fundamentally change the nature of the conflict. It would mean that a very important threshold was crossed. Even using a low-yield nuclear weapon would be a very serious (development), which would change the nature of the war in Ukraine,” Stoltenberg told a news conference after the NATO defense ministers’ meeting.

He assured that the Alliance would remain vigilant in the coming weeks and, after recalling that the fundamental purpose of NATO’s nuclear deterrent is to keep the peace, underlined that it seemed “extremely remote” that the conditions would exist that would compel NATO to respond using nuclear weapons.
