Turkey: The death toll from the explosion at the Amasra coal mine has risen to 28 – Agony for the trapped

The Turkish Energy Minister estimated that the explosion was probably caused by the ignition of some flammable material, perhaps methane.

The death toll from the explosion that occurred yesterday Friday in a coal mine in northwestern Turkey has risen to 28, according to the latest report released by the Minister of Health, Fahetin Koca.

At the same time, 15 workers remain trapped with most of them in the mine gallery where the fire that broke out is still burning, according to Energy Minister Fatih Domez.

However, the Turkish authorities express optimism that they will be able to release them within the day.

“It’s not a huge fire, but to get there safely, the fire and the carbon monoxide gas have to be put out,” the energy minister, who was at the mine, told reporters.

“58 workers were freed after the explosion. We have 15 who are trying to reach them with the rescue crews,” said the Minister of the Interior of Turkey, Suleiman Soylu.

It is estimated that around 110 workers were inside the mine at the time of the explosion.

Earlier, the Turkish energy minister estimated that the explosion was probably caused by the ignition of some flammable material, most likely methane.

The president of Turkey, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, is expected to be at the mine in the next few hours, who expressed the hope that the number of dead will not increase further and that the miners who remain trapped in the galleries will be freed safe and sound.
