Heavy rains have hit southeastern Australia for days, with one person killed in flash floods, police said.
A 71-year-old man was “found dead in the flooded backyard” of his home in Rochester, a small town north of Melbourne, local police said, adding that the exact causes of his death have not yet been clarified.
In three states of southeastern Australiacars were submerged and homes were flooded, with Melbourne’s suburbs among the areas hardest hit by the torrential rains.
Today the rains started to pour down and residents of the affected areas were walking on streets full of mud as well as all kinds of debris and damaged cars.
Evacuation orders remain in effect for dozens of locations.
“It’s serious, it’s probably very dangerous,” Victorian Premier Dan Andrews warned.
The east coast of Australia has been hit by repeated extreme weather events for two years.
In March, this area was hit hard by severe flooding, which claimed the lives of 20 people. Also in July, thousands of Sydney residents were forced from their homes due to torrential rains.
