New US strike on Turkey: Condemnation resolution for Cyprus

The United States has dealt another blow to Ankara. The reason for a condemnation resolution for the aggressive behavior shown by Turkey against the Republic of Cyprus, which was adopted on Friday by the Committee on Foreign Affairs of the American Parliament.

The specific resolution entitled “Condemning Turkey for its Repeated Aggression Against Cyprus” was tabled by New York MP Nikol Malliotaki. Among other things, he calls on Ankara to stop the provocative actions in Varosia and its illegal activities within the Cypriot EEZ. At the same time, he emphasizes that the settlement of the Cyprus problem must be done on the basis of a bi-zonal, bi-communal federation.

In particular, the resolution:

Strongly condemns Turkey’s continued military presence in Cyprus and calls on Turkey to withdraw immediately and the total of 35,000 troops it’s expected to maintain on the island

• calls on Turkey to remain committed to democratic principles and the NATO mission.

• calls on Turkey and the Turkish Cypriots to withdraw the provocative unilateral actions in Varos that violate international law, increase tensions and obstruct efforts to resume talks on resolving the Cyprus issue in accordance with United Nations Security Council resolutions.

Condemns Turkey for its support of the Turkish Cypriot actions in Varos and calls for the transfer of the Varos region to its legal inhabitants under United Nations Interim Administration in accordance with United Nations Security Council Resolution 550 (1984).

• reiterates that the overall settlement of the Cyprus problem must be based on a bi-zonal, bi-communal federation with political equality, in accordance with the relevant resolutions of the United Nations Security Council.

• calls on Turkey to stop its illegal activities within the Exclusive Economic Zone of Cyprus.

• Calls on the Turkish government to provide the means to American and Cypriot citizens to seek financial redress or to recover property lost in the territory of Cyprus illegally controlled by the Turkish Cypriots with the support of the Turkish government.

• calls on Turkey to work together to recover the four American citizens and more than 1,000 Cypriots still missing after the 1974 invasion of Cyprus.

• Encourages the United States to work with partners who have a common understanding of the United Nations’ efforts to resolve the situation in Varos and the overall settlement of the Cyprus problem.

The resolution records in detail the destabilizing actions of Turkey in the Eastern Mediterranean and the wider region, as well as its delinquent behavior against Cyprus.

In particular, the resolution takes into account the following:

• President Erdoγan and the Justice and Development Party have used almost two decades in power to weaken Turkey’s judiciary, deploy political allies in key military and intelligence posts, and fight for freedom of speech and the press. and illegally imprison political opponents, journalists and minorities.

• Under President Erdogan, Turkey seeks to establish itself as the dominant power in the Eastern Mediterranean, North Africa and the Caucasus, and has taken provocative action against NATO allies, the European Union and the wider region.

• Under the leadership of President Erdogan, Turkey has been involved in repeated aggression against Cyprus.

• The Turkish army invaded the Republic of Cyprus in 1974, and since then the northern part of the island has been illegally ruled by the Turkish Cypriots with the support of the Turkish government.

• The Turkish government has tolerated or supported the desecration of more than 500 Orthodox Christian churches and religious sites in the territory of the Republic of Cyprus.

• As a member of the Council of Europe, Turkey is obliged to comply with the rulings of the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR).

• Turkey has refused to comply with the decision of the ECHR, which has issued decisions and opinions confirming that persons, including US citizens, who own real estate within the territory of the Republic of Cyprus, which is under illegal administration. by the Turkish Cypriots with the support of Turkey, are the only legal owners of this real estate

Despite agreeing to do so, the Turkish government has failed to adequately support international efforts to locate and identify the bodies of individuals, including four US citizens and more than 1,000 Cypriots who remain missing from the Turkish invasion of Kyrgyzstan. 1974.
