Vladimir Putin and Kim Jong Un congratulate Xi on his 3rd term as China’s leader – Moscow increasingly sees Beijing as a key geopolitical and economic partner
The Russian president Vladimir Putin and the leader of North Korea Kim Jong Un they warmly congratulated the Chinese president today Sunday Xi Jinping, who secured a third term in leadership of his party and country.
According to the Kremlin, Putin told Xi that he looked forward to the further development of “comprehensive cooperation” between Russia and China.
“The outcome of the party conference confirms fully your political power as well as the unity of the party you lead,” Putin told Xi, according to the Kremlin’s website.
The Russian president said he was confident Xi’s re-election would “strengthen China’s position on the international stage” and help the country implement important domestic investment and development plans, the Kremlin said.
Xi and Putin signed a “borderless” partnership in February, three weeks before Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Since then, China has maintained a cautious stance, criticizing Western sanctions against Russia, but not endorsing or assisting the Russian military operation.
Last month, during a face-to-face meeting between the two leaders, Putin said he understood Xi had “questions and concerns” about the situation in Ukraine, an unprecedented public acknowledgment of their differences over the war.
Moscow increasingly sees Beijing as key geopolitical and economic partner because of Western sanctions and the isolation he faces, and Putin has sought to cultivate warm personal ties with Xi.
For his part, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un today sent his “warm congratulations” to Chinese President Xi Jinping for his re-emergence as the leader of his party and country, as reported by the state-run KCNA news agency today.
“I will build, with you, a brighter future on relations” between North Korea and China, Kim said, according to KCNA.
