Little is known about how Stancak so quietly amassed such wealth
A Chicago man, Joseph Stancak, who died in 2016, left behind $11 million, marking the largest unclaimed fortune in the country, according to People magazine.
In this particular case, the money “went” to 119 distant relatives of Joseph, who knew nothing about this huge fortune.
The majority of his family members live in Poland and Slovakia, the state treasurer said, noting that his parents were also born in Poland. However, seven relatives were located in the Chicago area, while others were found in New Jersey, New York and Minnesota.
Joseph Stancak was found dead in his home in the Gage Park neighborhood on December 23, 2016. He was 87 years old.
“Little is known about how Stancak so quietly amassed such wealth, although he did own a boat named ‘Easy,'” according to the treasurer’s office.
He never had children. Although he had seven siblings, they all died before him and they had no children either.
Treasurer Michael Frerichs added of Stancak’s relatives: “This is a life-changing sum of money. I wish we knew more things… It is not clear how this man amassed such wealth,” he added.
